Vortex-induced vibration (VIV) is one of the most persistent flow-induced failure mechanisms in industrial cylindrical structures β from heat exchanger tubes to thermowells, sampling needles, and valve internals. When fluid flows perpendicular to a cylindrical body, alternating vortices shed at a frequency determined by the Strouhal relationship (fs = St Γ V / D). If this shedding frequency coincides with the structure's natural frequency, lock-in resonance occurs β a self-sustaining oscillation that can cause fatigue failure in days rather than years. This calculator performs the full ASME PTC 19.3 TW-2016 assessment: Reynolds number computation, Strouhal number selection for both lift (S1) and drag (S2) directions, natural frequency derivation from beam dynamics with hydrodynamic mass correction, and PASS/FAIL evaluation against the resonance criteria. The frequency-velocity sweep chart visualizes the entire operating envelope, showing exactly where lock-in risk exists. Built-in material database covers 22 industrial alloys from carbon steel to zirconium. For DBB valves with sampling needles, this assessment is critical β the sampling needle is a cantilever beam immersed in cross-flow, and its failure follows a predictable four-stage cascade: root weld fatigue cracking β DBB seat seal failure β sampling distortion and instrument damage β needle fracture and pipeline blockage.
