Butterfly valves are widely applied in wastewater treatment, mining slurry transportation, chemical sludge treatment and solid-liquid two-phase medium pipelines, thanks to their compact structure, light weight and cost-effective advantages. They are the preferred control valves for low and medium pressure fluid regulation systems in various industries. However, in slurry working conditions with solid suspended particles, butterfly valves always face prominent problems of rapid seat wear, frequent leakage and short service life, leading to high recurring maintenance costs for enterprises. Abrasive erosion caused by solid particles is the core reason for rapid butterfly valve seat wear. Slurry medium contains a large number of hard impurities such as mineral particles, sand and suspended solids. When the butterfly valve is in a half-open throttling state, the internal flow field becomes turbulent with sharply increased local flow velocity. These hard solid particles continuously impact, scrape and grind the surface of rubber or PTFE valve seats, forming irreversible abrasive grooves and scratch damage, which completely destroys the sealing structure. Long-term throttling operation further accelerates seat aging and wear. Many production enterprises habitually use butterfly valves for long-term flow regulation, keeping the valves in a half-open state for a long time. The turbulent scouring force generated by half-open operation is far stronger than full-open working conditions. Conventional EPDM and NBR rubber seats are not designed for anti-abrasion working conditions and will age and fail rapidly in slurry environments. In addition, bottom sediment extrusion wear is another key factor affecting sealing performance. After long-term pipeline operation, solid impurities will deposit at the bottom of the pipeline. When the butterfly valve is closed, the butterfly plate will directly squeeze and roll the deposited particles onto the valve seat surface, forming permanent compression gaps, resulting in loose sealing and continuous medium leakage. Combined with on-site application experience, targeted radical solutions are summarized for different slurry working conditions. For light slurry working conditions with fewer impurities, upgrading to high wear-resistant polyurethane valve seats can effectively extend service life. For heavy particle and high-abrasion mining slurry working conditions, metal hard-seat butterfly valves are the best choice to avoid abrasive wear fundamentally. Meanwhile, installing pipeline front-end filters can intercept large-particle impurities and reduce medium abrasiveness. Standardizing operation habits and avoiding long-term half-open throttling can greatly reduce turbulent scouring damage to valve seats and maximize the service life of butterfly valves.
