High-Pressure Y Globe Valve
About High-Pressure Y Globe Valve
2" - 12" (DN50 - DN300)
Class 600 - 2500 / PN 100-420
ASME B16.34, API 602 (forged), manufacturer-specific for pressure-seal Y-pattern globe valves
A182 F22 (forged Cr-Mo), A182 F91 (forged 9Cr-1Mo-V), A182 F316 (forged stainless)
Stellite overlay on seat ring and disc face — standard for high-pressure throttling
Plug disc with Stellite overlay. Disc guides inside body bore for centered seating at high differential pressure.
Pressure-seal (self-sealing) — line pressure compresses seal ring between bonnet and body. Higher pressure = tighter seal.
OS&Y rising stem with handwheel
Y-pattern body. 45° flow angle. Flanged or butt weld ends. Forged body.
Two Design Changes That Matter
This valve solves two problems standard globe valves can't handle at high pressure — flow efficiency and bonnet sealing.
Y-pattern body angles the flow path at 45° from inlet to outlet. Standard T-pattern forces two 90° turns — enter horizontal, drop vertical, rise vertical, exit horizontal. The Y angle cuts that to one 45° turn. Pressure drop at full open runs 30-50% lower than T-pattern at the same size and flow rate.
At Class 600+ pressures, every psi of drop costs pumping energy. Shaving 20-30% off valve pressure drop on a 1500 psi throttling station adds up fast. The Y-pattern delivers that efficiency while keeping the disc-on-seat throttling control that defines a globe valve.
Pressure-seal bonnet solves the bolt problem. Bolted bonnets at Class 600+ need massive bolts holding against upward internal pressure. At Class 1500-2500, those bolts get absurdly large — still a potential leak path under thermal cycling. Pressure-seal flips the logic: internal pressure compresses the seal ring. Higher pressure, tighter seal. No bolts carrying operating load.
Forged Bodies — No Casting at These Pressures
A182 F22, F91, F316 — all forged. Casting porosity at Class 600+ is a crack initiation site under operating pressure. Forged bodies eliminate that — zero porosity, homogeneous grain structure.
F22 handles high-temperature steam below 565°C. F91 steps up with improved creep resistance — standard for power station main steam. F316 covers corrosive petrochemical high-pressure service.
Stellite Is Standard Here
Stellite overlay on both seat ring and disc face comes standard — not optional. At Class 600+ throttling pressures, disc-seat impact energy during closing is significantly higher. High-velocity flow across seating surfaces at partial disc positions erodes bare metal. Cobalt-chromium Stellite survives that environment.
Disc guides inside the body bore for centered seating at high differential pressure — can't drift off-center under asymmetric forces during closing.
Where This Valve Gets Specified
Power stations — main steam bypass, reheater drain, feedwater recirculation. High-pressure steam throttling where disc-position control operates from Class 600 through Class 2500. Petrochemical service — throttling stations above 1000 psi where you need globe regulation authority but can't afford T-pattern's full pressure drop penalty.
The Y-pattern globe with pressure-seal bonnet and forged body is the standard specification for this envelope.
30-50% lower pressure drop at full open. Saves pumping energy at Class 600+ pressures. Need maximum throttling authority? T-pattern. Need efficiency? Y-pattern.
Line pressure compresses the seal ring — higher pressure, tighter seal. Bonnet retention hardware only holds during assembly. Under pressure, the valve seals itself.
Cast porosity becomes crack initiation sites at these pressures. Forged bodies: zero porosity, homogeneous grain.
Shutoff works, but full-open drop is still higher than gate or ball. Use it for throttling.
Butt weld: permanent, leak-free, can't remove without re-welding. Flanged: bolted removal, better maintenance access.
