Slurry Transport & Tailings Management

Mineral processing plants transport ore slurry (30-70% solids by weight) through pipelines to tailings dams or processing circuits. Knife gate valves isolate slurry lines with full-bore, non-clogging design. Bidirectional knife gates handle reverse flow for line flushing. Flotation & Concentration

Froth flotation circuits separate valuable minerals from gangue using chemical reagents and air bubbles. Slurry feed valves control flotation cell levels. Pneumatically-actuated knife gate valves provide fast on/off isolation for cell maintenance. Reagent dosing uses small precision globe valves. Concentrate thickener underflow uses abrasion-resistant knife gate valves.

Acid Mine Drainage & Water Management

Acid mine drainage (AMD) contains dissolved heavy metals and sulfuric acid (pH 2-4). Lime neutralization plants use PTFE-lined valves for acid handling. Treated water discharge uses corrosion-resistant butterfly valves with epoxy coating. Pump stations use dual-plate check valves to prevent reverse flow on pump shutdown.

Leaching & SX-EW

Heap leaching and solvent extraction-electrowinning (SX-EW) circuits for copper, gold, and uranium use sulfuric acid or cyanide solutions. PTFE-lined or Hastelloy valves handle leach solutions. Solvent extraction uses organic extractants (kerosene-based) requiring fire-safe valves. Pregnant leach solution (PLS) uses corrosion-resistant butterfly valves for flow control.

Why use knife gate valves instead of gate valves for slurry service?+
Knife gate valves have a sharp-edged, beveled disc that cuts through solids and slurry, preventing clogging in the seat area. Standard gate valves trap slurry in the body cavity and bonnet, causing the wedge to jam. Knife gate valves have a flat body with no cavity, allowing slurry to pass freely. Bidirectional knife gates use elastomer seats on both sides for sealing in either flow direction — essential for flushing and reverse-flow applications.
What lining materials are used for abrasive slurry valves?+
For abrasive slurry service, we offer: (1) Natural rubber (NR) — best abrasion resistance for pH 4-11, up to 80°C, (2) Polyurethane (PU) — superior abrasion resistance for sharp particles, up to 80°C, (3) Nitrile rubber (NBR) — oil-resistant for hydrocarbon-contaminated slurries, (4) Hypalon (CSM) — chemical resistance for acidic slurries, (5) Ceramic-lined — for extreme abrasion in coarse ore slurry. Liner selection depends on particle size, shape, velocity, and chemistry.
How are mining valves actuated for remote locations?+
Mining operations in remote locations use pneumatic actuators powered by plant compressed air (6-8 bar). Advantages: no electrical power required in hazardous areas, fail-safe spring return for emergency shutdown, fast operation (2-10 seconds), and simple maintenance. For critical isolation, we provide double-acting pneumatic actuators with air reservoir backup. Solar-powered electric actuators are available for remote pipeline installations without compressed air.
What is the typical service life of valves in slurry applications?+
Slurry valve life depends on flow velocity, particle size/hardness, and solids concentration. Typical service life with elastomer-lined knife gate valves: 12-24 months for fine tailings slurry (<200 µm, <5 m/s), 6-12 months for coarse ore slurry (>500 µm, >3 m/s), and 3-6 months for very abrasive silica or magnetite slurry. We provide wear indicators (thickness monitoring ports) and recommend keeping spare liners and discs for quick changeout during planned maintenance.
